Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week with These Kind Gestures

The world could always use a little more kindness.

This year, February 14 isn’t just about celebrating love; it’s the beginning of the annual Random Acts of Kindness Week. From February 14 – 20, people around the world are encouraged to show small, meaningful gestures of kindness and gratitude to  make the world a more welcoming place.

Looking for ideas on how you can make a difference during Random Acts of Kindness Week?

Here are some suggestions you can try, whether you’re traveling or staying local this year.

Write a Letter or a Postcard

These days, it’s a true treat to get something in the mail that isn’t a bill or a mass mailer.

Take time to write a letter to a friend or family member who means a lot to you. Go all out and decorate the letter with doodles and stickers or keep it simple with a heartfelt note. The sentiment will be appreciated all the same.

Want to send something more personal? Make your own postcard with an app like Postagram. Once you upload a picture and write a brief personal note to make the recipient smile, Postagram will print and send it directly to them from the app.

Send a Simple Text

Has someone crossed your mind whom you haven’t thought of in a while? Send them a text to let them know you’ve been thinking about them. Share a favorite memory, or the story or situation that brought them to mind.

Maybe there’s someone you know who has been working really hard or could use a little pick-me-up. A “thinking of you” text or a quick message to let a person know you’re proud of them can go a long way in someone’s day.

Do Something for the Planet

Kindness isn’t exclusively between people. A gesture such as planting some wildflowers or walking to the store instead of driving can help make an ecological impact that demonstrates kindness to our planet.

Other things you can do to be kind to the environment include making an effort to turn off all unnecessary lights in your home or office, switching to energy-saving LED lightbulbs, and using a reusable water bottle instead of single-use plastic bottles.

If you’re vacationing in Orlando, consider taking one of Rosen Inn closest to Universal's scheduled shuttles to the local theme parks to save on gas and carbon emissions.

Support a Small Business

Small businesses need our patronage now more than ever.

One way you can show a little kindness is by choosing to shop or dine locally. One purchase or meal can go a long way with a small business, as does word of mouth following a positive experience.

If you need a little inspiration, here are some of our favorite Orlando small businesses you can support any time of year.

Tip Generously

Servers work hard to brighten other people’s days. Good customer service makes a big impact on a customer’s mood and experience. You feel the difference whether it’s a barista at a coffee counter or a waiter at your favorite restaurant.

Orlando is known for its hospitality. Tens of thousands of Orlando locals work in the industry to ensure all our visitors and residents receive warm, welcoming service.

Leaving a nice tip is a lovely way of showing kindness, and it will mean a lot to the person to whom the gesture is extended.

Write a Positive Review

If you’ve had a good experience recently, whether at a restaurant, store, or even a doctor’s office, take a moment to write a positive review online.

Many businesses rely on reviews and word of mouth to generate new business and clientele. Your positive words may influence someone to try something new or support one of your favorite local businesses.

Mentioning helpful employees by name is a great way to recognize someone for their outstanding work. It’s a simple way to show gratitude for the positive ways they’ve influenced your experience as a customer.

Pay a Stranger a Compliment

There’s nothing better than receiving a compliment from someone passing by on the street.

If you see someone sporting an outfit you love, tell them! Go out of your way to compliment a person’s style or their beautiful eyes; it’s a simple way to potentially make a big difference in someone’s day.

Leave a Positive Note for Someone

A surprise note and words of encouragement are great ways to demonstrate kindness.

If you’re at work, write a note for a coworker or your boss and leave it on their desk. Traveling and staying in a hotel? Leave a note for your housekeeping team while you’re out thanking them for their hard work and expressing your gratitude.

Staying home during Random Acts of Kindness Week? Pack an extra note in your kid’s (or partner’s) lunchbox telling them how proud you are or sharing your favorite thing about them.

Offer to Take a Photo

Orlando sees over 74 million tourists every year, many of whom try to capture memories as photos.

If you see a couple or a family struggling to squeeze into a selfie, offer to take the photo for them. You may be helping them capture a special moment that they’ll look back on and treasure for many years to come.

Show Yourself Some Kindness

Don’t forget to be kind to yourself during Random Acts of Kindness Week; you deserve it, too!

Get a massage or a pedicure, or treat yourself to your favorite snack.

Instead of scrolling on your phone, curl up with a good book you’ve been wanting to read or take time to try a new recipe.

Be gentle with your thoughts and emotions. We can often be our harshest critics so this week, cut yourself some slack. Reflect and acknowledge all the amazing things you do every day.
